In a statement signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, Francis Enobore the Controller General, who inspected the prisons stated that trouble started when prisons officials were about to carry out routine cell-search in the morning but the inmates in a particular cell resisted the exercise.
He said:
"They suddenly became riotous, broke other cells and released the inmates. They eventually broke into the workshop to arm themselves with dangerous weapons and severely attacked some staff trapped in the yard while others made for the main gate and pulled it down”.He said the prisons security agencies on guard outside the perimeter fence were firing warning shots to stop the inmates from escaping but a number of them rushed out to escape. Ahmed said
The Controller General said:
“The bold attempt was resisted by the combined team of armed personnel who prevented what would have turned into a catastrophic security situation had the inmates succeeded in escaping.”
At the end of the confusion, no fewer than six inmates were killed while 10 were injured. Six prisons officers who were injured are said to be currently receiving treatment alongside the inmates.
“Regrettably, at the end of the fracas, six prisoners died and 10 others were injured. Six prisons officers were severely injured. However, both staff and inmates are responding to treatment with some already discharged from the hospital. The Controller General has since set up a three-member panel to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident to establish what caused the riot.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said:
“Under the present APC government of President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria is returning to full-blown unitary system of government. “It is on record that the APC said at a debate on ‘Addressing the rising insecurity in Nigeria, what is the master plan?’ organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) on December 18, 2014, that it (APC) would ensure true federalism and adequate community policing through the establishment of state-controlled police so as to curb the protracted security challenges in the country.
“Sad enough, now that it is the ruling party, APC is no longer talking about true federalism, and state police it canvassed while in the opposition.” Governor Fayose, who canvassed for development of state governments, noted that; “Nigeria developed faster in the 50s and 60s when it was practising confederal system of government, with the regions running its own affairs almost autonomously.
“A situation where a state cannot do anything about its mineral resources without approval from the Federal Government, will not foster the development that we all yearn for.” the governor said. A situation where the federal government has turned itself into lord and master over other federating units in the country, using federal agencies to oppress even governors is not acceptable.”

Photos: Aggrieved 2000 prospective Immigration officers whose training were suspended last year hold vigil in front of Aso Rock
2000 prospective immigration officers whose training were suspended shortly after President Buhari assumed office last year, had a vigil in front of the state House on Friday August 19th into Saturday August 20th.
The protesters were almost done with their training and were about to start off work as Immigration officers when President Buhari on August 20th last year ordered that their recruitment exercise be suspended. The protesters were in the state house to demand that their suspension be called off and they be absorbed fully into the Ministry of Interior.
The process for their recruitment was started by the last administration in 2014 but after the failure of the exercise which saw over 20 applicants dying, another recruitment exercise was started on February 9th 2015.
Over one million Nigerians applied but 48,747 were shortlisted from which 2,000 including 1,457 males and 543 females were offered provisional appointments by May 22nd 2015. When the President Buhari led administration came into power, the training of those shortlisted was suspended in August.
Despite interventions from the House of Representatives on Interior calling for the presidency to absorb the affected applicants, their case has remained unanswered.
